NairoBits Trust positively changes the lives of vulnerable youth by improving their ability to contribute to their socio-economic well-being through ICT. The Trust empowers marginalized youth between ages of 15 to 24 living in the Urban Informal Settlements. The Trust envisages a situation where 70% of the urban informal settlement youth can be able to access Information Communication Technology (ICT) skills that would improve their chances of getting employment as well as increase their ability to enter the business market. The Trust develops the youth’s character by inculcating critical elements of personal confidence, self-esteem, and general life skills.

This is a very innovative ICT course which is implemented in three levels. The courses are progressive starting from introduction to computers up to specialization in ICT Web design and development. We get connected, go to digital garage and finalise on media lab. These are innovative ICT levels that progressively start from introduction to basic computer skills to professional web design and development. After the completion of the three levels the youth graduate and are linked to internship and employment opportunities in ICT related companies.

Young people between the ages of 10-24 years are at risk of adverse reproductive health outcomes that subsequently affect achievement of their life goals as well their ability to maximally contribute to national development. This group face many reproductive health challenges which include HIV & AIDS, sexually transmitted infections, sexual exploitation, sexual violence, teenage pregnancy, unsafe abortion, school dropouts, menstrual problems, pregnancy related problems, side effects of use of contraceptives, unprotected sex, cervical cancers, Gender-based violence , drugs and substance abuse and harmful practices like early marriages, early forced marriages and female genital cutting.

In order to reduce these risky sexual behaviors, NairoBits is implementing the Get Up Stand Out! Program that empowers youth on comprehensive Sexual Reproductive Health & Rights education and access to services that match their needs and ability to make their own informed SRHR decisions. ICT is taking a central role in all aspects of life and some cultures excludes girls by favoring and preparing only boys for ICT and technical skills and jobs, hence the digital and technical divide especially for marginalized girls. Working in the informal settlements has exposed us to issues affecting young girls leading to increased rate of school dropout among the girls, unwanted pregnancies leading to early marriages. These girls don’t get to continue with their education and miss out on lack of opportunities due to lack of adequate skillset for the job market. NairoBits is bridging this by advocating for equal educational skills and access opportunities for girls from Nairobi slums. We will also lobby at the employment level for equal job opportunities to prove that our girls have the same capabilities with our boys.

We prepare the youth with life skills that are essential for workplace and interpersonal relationship. This is in an effort to positively change the lives of vulnerable youth and improve their ability to contribute to their socio-economic well-being.

We equip the youth with entrepreneurship skills. These skills enable the youth to identify opportunities, start, run and grow a business. This leads to an improved quality of life for vulnerable youth and enables them to lead productive lives and make meaningful contributions in the society. In partnership with Digital Opportunity Trust (DOT), NairoBits is trains the youth on business start ups and mentoring them on the same.
